Health Management Associates Inc. The Group's principal activity is to provide general acute care health services in non-urban communities. Its acute care hospitals offer medical and surgical services, including inpatient care, intensive and cardiac care, diagnostic services and emergency services. The Group also provides outpatient services such as one-day surgery, laboratory, x-ray, respiratory therapy, cardiology and physical therapy. At certain of its hospitals, specialty services such as oncology, radiation therapy, CT scanning, MRI imaging, lithotripsy and full-service obstetrics are provided. The Group's two psychiatric-only hospitals focus mainly on child/adolescent intensive residential treatment programs. At 30-Sep-2002, the Group operated 41 general acute care hospitals with a total of 5,769 licensed beds and two psychiatric-only hospitals with a total of 134 licensed beds. At 01-Jan-2003, the Group acquired the Madison County Medical Center.
